What is yoga?
The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word "Yuj" meaning to yoke, join or unite. In the West, the
term "yoga" is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its postures as a form of exercise.
What are the benefits of yoga?
Yoga can be used to manage stress, recover from injuries or improve health and fitness as well
as many other things. It can bring a philosophical perspective to life, bring tranquility and mental
strength. There is no-one who cannot benefit from its practice. Yoga has both preventive and
therapeutic benefits and has been shown to aid the body physically and mentally. The many physical
benefits of yoga are improving flexibility, and strengthening, toning, and building muscles; correcting
posture and easing back pain through strengthening the spine. It can also help to alleviate stress by
calming the mind.
Am I too fat/thin/tall/small/old/young/unfit/inflexible?
Our yoga classes are for everybody. Yoga can be modified to suit every person’s body type and
ability.
What are the benefits?
When you start to practice yoga you will find that it works on all levels of the body, mind and spirit.
Physically as a beginner you will experience yoga as a form of physical exercise that enables you
to improve strength, flexibility, stamina and balance. However, unlike other forms of exercise you
will also feel an increased sense of well-being and vitality as the body is exercised organically - the
inner organs, circulation, bones, muscles and joints are all worked so as to improve their function
and efficiency. As a result, you can overcome many symptoms of an imbalanced modern life such
as headaches, stiff necks, backache, insomnia and digestive disorders. You are able to harness
your energy to bring vitality to everyday activities and so your health, as opposed to merely fitness,
improves.
